CORNUS KOUSA

A large elegant shrub native to Japan and Korea. Later blooming; late spring or early summer. May reach an height of 6 – 8 m. Delicate limb structure and spreading, dense horizontal growth habit. Lustrous green leaves, 10 cm. long with an oval elliptical form, turning yellow in autumn. The numerous flowers of which the white bracts are the conspicuous part, are poised on slender erect stalks covering the spreading branches. Creamy white, slender-pointed, 5-10 cm. long, rather narrow bracts have rosy margins. In late summer – early autumn, red fruit hang below branches like big strawberries, edible. Rich bronze and crimson autumn colour. Much appreciated as specimen solitary plant. Not recommended for poor, shallow chalk soils.
