Acer shirasawanum aurem
(Synonym: 'Acer japonicum aureum. )
Full moon golden maple
This is quite a spectacular and much appreciated cultivar.
The Spring colouring is a particular pale yellowish-green tone. Further
into the season the leaves become a deeper golden yellow colour. In partly
shady areas the leaves keep their yellow hue a bit longer.
Direct sunlight can cause leaf burnings. Leaves are generally 6-8 cm wide,
but can be 5-11 on mature specimens. The Autumn colouring is often spectacular,
as it changes from orange to red or purple.
The growth habit is rather stocky. The young plants grow quite vigorously
for a few years, becoming more compact and multi- branched later on. The
seeds are in very tight groups of keys and become a brilliant red colour.
They often emerge from the golden foliage, adding further decorative qualities
to this beautiful plant.
