Acer palmatum "Osakazuki"
This very popular cultivar is well known for its deep
crimson Autumn colouring. It is a rough and strong plant with large leaves
for a palmatum, it has been listed in catalogues since the mid 1800's.
The 7- lobed palmated leaves are generally 9 cm long, measured from the
base of the petiole to the tip, and 12-14 cm wide.
On young vigorous buds leaves can grow up to 12-13 cm long and 17-18 cm
wide. Each lobe has a clearly ovate shape and ends in a narrow apex. The
foliage is of a deep green colour for most of the season, it does not
brown and it lasts quite a long time. It has been observed that the typically
Autumn crimson colouring seems to shine even at sunset.
The plants grow quite rapidly for the first few years and then slow down
as for the majority of palmatum. They brunch out more to form a small
rounded-top tree. They do not exceed 6-7 metres in height.
