Acer palmatum

"Higasayama"
(from mount Higasa)

The changeable and variegated colour is the distinctive feature of this plant. In Spring the buds open up forming some light creamy coloured curled little leaves with oblong bright crimson perules. This lasts until the single leaf opens with an effect similar to the blooming of a flower.
The veins are bordered by a dark green colour, while the lobe edges are creamy. In Autumn the creamy colour parts become orange to dark yellow. This cultivar is suitable for growing as a Bonsai.
The new leaves present on the buds will almost always be untypical of this cultivar. These buds will go back to being the typical 'Higasayama' starting from the second year of life, without need for further pruning. The plants can grow quite vigorously reaching 3 metres in height.
